I am thrilled my first novel was so well recieved. After 30 years of making movies, it is a great pleasure to me to see what I had in mind stay the same as I wrote it.
My approach is focused on understanding the reader desire to be catapulted into a world unkown to him, wondering what he would do.
RUN! a novel by Michael Taverna
Fans of John Grisham's financial and legal thrillers will find familiar elements in "RUN!" particularly in its exploration of corporate malfeasance and its consequences. The Mexican settings and cross-border pursuit evoke Don Winslow's cartel narratives, though Taverna's approach is less brutally visceral and more psychologically nuanced. There are also echoes of Michael Connelly's procedural precision in the DEA investigation threads, and Lee Child's propulsive action in the escape sequences.
While "RUN!" doesn't radically reinvent the international thriller genre, it executes the expected conventions with exceptional skill and adds distinctive strengths in its descriptive prose and setting contrasts. The novel demonstrates a deep understanding of what makes the genre work while avoiding the formulaic predictability that can plague lesser entries.

Taverna's most remarkable achievement is his atmospheric prose. From the opening chapter's sensory-rich description of Puerto Vallarta's "golden glow over the sand and sea" to the "relentless presence" of the sun beating down on El Playon Prison's dirt courtyard, the author demonstrates an exceptional ability to transport readers directly into each setting. Weather and environment become characters in their own right, with storms, heat, and landscape mirroring the emotional states of the protagonists and amplifying the tension of key scenes.
The character development is equally impressive. Mark Roldan emerges as a compelling protagonist whose ethical dilemmas feel authentic and consequential. His relationship with Laura Mayer adds emotional complexity to the narrative, particularly as her connection to her father William Mayer—Mark's employer and apparent antagonist—creates layers of conflict that transcend typical thriller dynamics. Supporting characters, from DEA agents to prison contacts, are rendered with sufficient detail to make them memorable without distracting from the central narrative.
The novel's structure demonstrates Taverna's skill in pacing and tension-building. The 26 chapters progress with a clear sense of escalating stakes, alternating effectively between action sequences and character moments. The multiple storylines—including Mark's imprisonment and escape, the DEA investigation, and the machinations of the Mayer family—converge in satisfying ways that reward attentive readers without becoming overly convoluted.
